I think you might have misread something. The Toyota's attempt line made perfect sense to me. It actually says the same thing you do, that it's Toyota's car. The writer is theorizing that Toyota making the FR-S is their (i.e. Toyota's) attempt at fixing what they did to the Celica. Not sure what you're talking about or how that became a battle between Toyota and Subaru.
It seems the NYT really likes our cars.
