The issue with springs is more to do with the lack of available bump travel. On coilovers you usually will have adequate bump travel even past a 1 inch drop, especially with the firmer springs that coilovers use. But with lowering springs on regular shocks/struts you're starting to push it.

There is still geometry to worry about but bump travel is a bigger issue IMO.
