If the repair calls for long block, would you be satisfied with the secondary fix of mixing and matching? I'm not a mechanic but it sounds like if a short + your old parts would have worked, they(Scion/Subaru) would have suggested that in the first place.

I think I read on this forum a few weeks back something in regards to doing this, and why it was best to use a long block in certain scenarios. Someone with more engine rebuilding knowledge should answer that.
