You don't need to take a class, just need to take a test. You can download the gun safety study guide here:

Study it, go to your LGS (local gun store), take the test, purchase a firearm and wait 10 days for background check/cool off/waiting period. 18y/o for long gun, 21y/o for handgun.
If you want to start shooting, get a Ruger 10/22, you will have it for the rest of your life! Cheap (price) reliable rifle, no recoil, lots of aftermarket upgrades and the ammo is ridiculously cheap. It's a small caliber but you can learn a lot from it for very little money while having a blast.
