If you're building a PC for graphics rendering, why not go for AMD and overclock it? As said above, its performance per buck. Though AFAIK AMD isn't as efficient with their number crunching, but for sheer ghz per dollar, its worth it.

If you aren't worried about noise, a used rack server might be better...
