Take a look at the stock driveshaft setup. In the middle, well more towards the front, there's a large bearing that bolts to the body. That's the carrier bearing and it weighs a good bit. Since this piece doesn't rotate but is still a part of the driveshaft it is easy to make a lighter shaft when you make it a one piece, or, without a carrier bearing. But the weight loss isn't as beneficial as you would think, obviously.
