I see many have posted recommendations on differential gear oil but I find this rather confusing.

According to the Toyota/Scion Service manual, Toyota recommends

LT 75W-85 GL-5 (or equivalent) for Non Limited Slip Differentials

And

LX 75W-85 GL-5 (or equivalent) for Limited Slip Differentials

Both of this are synthetic gear oils, both have the same weight, yet they are different, as indicated by the Non-LSD (LT) vs. with LSD (LX).

I do realize there are no friction plates in the rear end, but there is certainly something different between the two gear oils Toyota recommends.

Does anyone “know” what those differences are?

Doesn’t make sense to me to change out gear oil and replace with aftermarket oil for “Non- LSD” if it does not have the properties Toyota recommends in the “With-LSD” installed in the car.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
