Its best to disconnect the battery ANYTIME a metal object could fall across any bare metal electical connections, in short (pun intended), get used to doing it. Resetting your electronics is a pain, but so is electrical circuit troubleshooting.

Dropped a socket off a wrench (doing something non-electrical) a few years ago working on my Conti SVT, socket fell to ground but also 'grounded' and blew the megafuse for the whole starting system. $15 for a 175 Amp fuse...
