I believe the original allocation is done on how many cars dealers sell overall, not balanced geographically. So it does not surprise me that the Norheast has more cars than customers. That is historically one the best selling areas for Subarus. But a rear drive sports cars that has to be a daily driver (for most buyers) is not as attractive in such cold weather areas. The more snow that a region gets, the less likely this car will be a hot commodity. (No pun intended).
For me that is too far, even to save 1000.00 off the sticker. Once you add in airline costs for a flight less than several days or a week in advance, then gas cost, and overnight stay (or stays), it is not such a good deal. But it depends on where you live and what number of airline options you have access to Personally, I am happy to have paid sticker and have the car home in an hour or two. Time is also money for most working people. But for someone who cannot find any regional dealer to sell at MSRP or very close, then heading to New England (or New York or even Pennsylvania) could well be worth it to be able to own this car and not wait five to seven months.
