I've only had brief experiences driving Miatas, but I can say that once I turned the my first corner in one I knew that Miatas handle MUCH better than corollas, even in stock form.
However, you can't really compare the two since they are inherently different in suspension design, weight, dimensions, wheelbase, and overall size. The miata is it's own unique driving experience as an 86 is, and is well deserving of it's own cult status.
The biggest difference between the two lies within the rear suspension, and wheel base. Miatas just grip better overall. but once they step out into oversteer they are notoriously harder to control than in a corolla due to it's diminuitive size. A corolla known for being more of a WOT car, as you basically just have to floor it to make enough power to carry a drift, and to keep within the power band when driving grip.
As for power, in a straight line a Miata would most likely get ahead, but sensory-wise, i'd go for the screaming underpowered 4AGE in my corolla over the noise a miata puts out.
Then again, there's something to be had about driving a miata with the top down through the twisties... you feel much more connected to the road and your surroundings.
If I were in a perfect world, i'd honestly have both sitting in my garage.
