Depends on how you look at it. I always take quarterly release annoucements to mean the first month of that period, and Winter is Dec, Jan and Feb (March has never been winter). So I read it as Dec 2012, you read it as Jan/Feb 2012, both are technically winter in the year 2012, just two different winters.
I would assume that if the mag/edmunds meant a jan 2012 release they would have printer "Early 2012 release" like most people..
