Rather be in debt earlier to get a good credit score then later when you have more responsibilities and cant afford a new vehicle. Also have a five year loan on your credit score is a requirement in some states, to purchase a house.
Now for the kid trying to decide on the transmission type I would go with a manual only because its a sports car and you have someone that can teach you how to drive. As just make sure you can financially afford 5-6 years of payments and not just one or two. Whatever your choice is I'm sure you wont regret it.
