The MkII was officially announced to be 95% of what the production model will look like. At that point, Toyota likely R&D'd the aerodynamics out of the MkI and started to engineer the tooling to manufacture the sheetmetal. The 2000GT-esque C-pillar (probably the most challenging part to design for manufacturability due to size and complexity of bends) is a prime example of what will be retained because of that.

MkI and MkIII are one-off molds that likely never received aerodynamic analysis and, hence, will not see tooling for manufacturing. The remaining 5% is left for any design changes that wouldn't significantly impact the already established design for manufacturability.
