No, it wasn't. Read the post again. He never mentions anything but RWD without traction control:
"Yes, people used to drive RWD cars with no traction control all the time before front wheel crap. It was no big deal, they just died a lot."
Thus seeming to imply that that was the only reason for the higher fatalities (he doesn't mention any safety improvements).
Again, I doubt that front wheel drive has much to do with decreasing fatalities.
