See, within the nissan company there are many who love the zcar even more than the skyline. They actually see the zcar as a halo car for nissan. To them, putting a 4 cylinder in and calling what is essentially a 240sx replacement a zcar is an insult to the nameplate. Thus, the concept was scratched, they went back to the drawing board, and the result was the 350z. If they want to make a light weight and low cost new zcar, i have a hard time seeing them accomplishing their goals with today's automotive market if they insist on having at least 6 cylinders. To date, the 99 concept is the only zcar to ever have a 4 cylinder engine.
I agree on the 6 cylinder engine, but I don't think that was specifically what Mr K meant in the interview. The complete idea/execution of the GT86 was closer to the original Z than the current Z is to the original.

There is no reason that Nissan couldn't make a less luxurious, smaller, lighter, more engaging, less expensive Z car, and still keep the 6 cylinder powerplant.

Imagine the twins with 2 seats (pushed back so the balance stays good with a longer/heavier motor), and V6 for say 3 grand more. Nissan could do it if they wanted.
