Single-DIN is a neat thought, I bet 52mm would fit fine above/below that. OOH! Or...one of the single-DIN flip-up display HUs. It'd cover the vents, but that's always been an issue. Then some gauges would fit below it.

Personally, I will most likely stick with a double-DIN unit but I don't plan to replace it at all any time soon (stock one is crap, but not what I want to spend money on right now).
