Picked mine up from the dealership. The service notes indicate that they tested the VVT-I hardware and found it was working properly. The only real work they did was to re-flash the ECU and test the car (~14 miles).
Driving home, I immediately noticed when the engine is free rev'd, the RPMs drop back down to 600 rpm very slowly and deliberately. That's different than before. No CEL/SL driving home, but at idle, I can feel a slight shudder/off-beat cadence. My STI felt the same way though, so that could be normal.
Will put 400+ miles on the car in the next 4 days and see how it goes.
