I don't think it was engine braking because I could feel engine braking if I lifted off the throttle. When you shift down it gives you a rather nasty jolt, which I somehow doubt is engine braking. I guess it could possibly be very very bad driveline shock due to bad lockup clutch programming. Whatever it is, cars shouldn't jolt when you shift down, and it doesn't make sense to brake when you shift down for more power.
