If it ain't bathed in an oil bath....it ain't considered "powertrain" under most company's policies. Though I do completely understand that one could make the argument that the engine can't run without the ECU.....but then it's going to come down to the benevolence of the dealer or your willingness to push the issue with the factory rep. In a case such as the CEL on the FRS and BRZ then I doubt you'd have to argue it b/c of the problems already showing up.....but down the line, let's say this is a tolerance issue that may not develop on some cars until past the 36K mile point, it may be a big hassle and expensive repair bill. I'm not saying that's definitely the case....just that it could be.
