I believe there's a group talented engineers at "Toyobru" responsible for engine development who screwed up, are deeply sorry for the problem, and are doing everything they can to make it right. Culturally the Japanese aren't very forgiving of themselves when they make serious mistakes.
This is a classic "Black Box" type of problem...
... we're trying to understand what's wrong with our cars based on what Toyota and Subaru are doing to fix them. To make matters worse there's a pretty good indication (to me anyway) there's may be more then one problem they're trying to solve (other wise just the new parts or just the new ECU would resolve the issue for all of us, and that's clearly not the case).
Toyota/Subaru dealers are effectievely in the same boat we're in trying to understand what's happening. At least I think my dealer is, everyone I have spoken gives me the same consistantly believable blank stare when we talk about the issue.
