My FR-S received the same ECU P/N as you, but it also got a new oil control valve and cam sprocket assy. This leads me to believe damage may still be occuring to other hardware on a case by case basis due to a) faulty original ECU code AND/OR b) quality issues with sprocket/valve manufacturing.

The new ECU could be compensating for the poorer manufacturing tolerances with optimized code; something the old code was likely not capable of performing. Therefore, new vehicles may now get away with just a reflash as well as existing vehicles recording a fault code showing no hardware damage.

This is all just a theory, but we'll see how this plays out over the next few weeks.
