Ya they are both essentially the same thing.
Best way to describe it is as a 'perminant wax' that never wears off. Basically, now I wash my car and dry it off and it looks like it was just waxed. Water beads off it like how water beads off a rain-X'd windshield. It is really convenient.
Opti-coat/guard forms a perminant bond with the clear coat. Hence the suggestion to have it applied by a professional.
