I've been following with all the topics it's hard to keep track of what stage everyone is in when comes to this damn issue, 54 ppl and counting.
I picked mine up on Wednesday and drove for bit now it's in the shop.
When I keep hearing new ECU, I'm thinking the same as you.
"However, I'm really curious what would necessitate an actual hardware replacement vs a simple reflash."
Just don't get that myself, but I hope you get that ECU and never have to go back to the dealer.
