The only reasons I ever saw this as a possible contender was:
1. If they offer a higher trim level that makes similar power:weight.
2. I was under the impression the price had jumped to the mid to high 20's to start, but I guess that was just a rumor?
Beyond that, the sports car/pony car market is defined by more powerful cars, with the exception of the Miata, which seems to have created its own niche market, and the closest competitor, the MR2, was canned several years ago.
That said, if the price and power:weight remain night and day, there is no debate to be had, and this car will end up competing (and winning, I expect) against cars like the GTI and whatever new Civic shitbox Honda trots out.
I still don't see this stealing away any Miata guys, but who knows until the thing is out dodging cones.
