Also both companies invested heavily into the FA20 development. I'm not sure STI alone has the resources/clout in the Toyota/Subaru partnership to implement an engine model change. Though Subaru chief engineer Masuda did mention stronger valve springs (or something) would allow it to rev higher in an interview with Top Gear.
