When I picked up my SVT Focus, I asked the previous owner what he called the car. 'Jack,' he replied. I said that was a shame because I name all my cars with female names (not that this is an issue due to the dual gendered nature to Jack(ie)). He claimed that a few countries (Russia and some South American countries) used male names for ships, while most Western countries preferred female names.
Dunno how true it is, but seemed to make sense to him. The SVT is Jack(ie) Straw.
