I'd just like to point out, if it hasn't been pointed out already, a major error that has been made in this thread.
I've been reading page by page and you guys are WAY off in your specs on the Mustang.
The Mustang GT500 weighs about 3850 with the new aluminum engine introduced in 2011.
The Mustang GT weighs about 3550-3600 with the 400+hp 5.0 Coyote engine and can be had for 28k out the door if you dont order any options. Optioned with the sport package which includes brembos, shorter gearing, and a different suspension tune brings the price to 33k and it will hang with an M3.
The Mustang V6 weighs in at 3450-3500 and outperforms the 3.8 Gen Coupe in essentially every performance category, including handling (the gen coupe feels a bit better but the stang has higher limits). All you need is a reflash to get rid of the 118mph speed limiter and it's pretty much amazing.
The Mustang family of cars really are the vehicles to beat in terms of affordable performance. They're nowhere near as heavy as the other ponycars and fully capable of taking down vehicles that cost WAY more. The 2011 GT rivals an M3 on the track and has more aftermarket support than any car I know of. The V6 is outperforming the 3.8 Gen Coupe for 5000 dollars less, and the new BOSS is as fast around a track as an Audi R8. (it annihilates the M3).
The mustang is going to provide the largest amount of competition for the FR-S (well, besides the Subaru version...lol), because it is the overall best FR performance car on the market currently, especially when factoring in price. Complain all you want about the live rear axle but read a few reviews or drive one and it's clear that it's not an issue at all; the live axle performs beautifully, along with the rest of the car. Even the interior is well done. 30+mpg highway with the V6....
Anyways, once I'm back from my deployment it's going to be either a nicely optioned Mustang GT for me, or an FR-S (which I will then heavily modify with the leftover money). The FR-S is probably going to be about 2750lbs and have 200hp. If there's a turbo option I'll get that....if there's not, I very well might take it off my list, as I'd rather spend 33k and get 420hp and great handling than spend 25k and get great handling and 200hp.
If they offered this thing with the WRX engine (preferably a year+ from now when the new 2.0L WRX engine is offered) and 265hp I'd be all over it in a heartbeat, because that's a tune away from 300+ and reliable in a ~2800lb car.
