I guess what I'm asking is if I upgrade my intake and exhaust is it like drinking through a 1" wide straw (overkill) and it breathes fine already for the tune. Are the gains we're seeing pre-tune for intake / exhaust going to get absorbed into the gains from the tune instead of being in addition to it? Don't want to spend $1500 and get minimal gains over the tune if I can save it for FI.

EDIT:

Sitting in front of a computer instead of on my phone now. Just to be clear, what I am wondering is if it could play out to this scenario (hypothetical numbers of course):
1. Added exhaust and intake and gained 13whp total
2. Flashed John's tune on otherwise stock (no exhaust or intake) and gained 14whp total
3. Flashed John's tune and added same exhaust and intake as #1 and gained 15whp total

I would opt for #2 and save my money for other things since my budget is relatively tight and I'm not too worried about the sound right now. I'm just curious if some of the intake/exhaust mods showing gains are due to the ECU adjusting to them (or getting false MAF readings due to intake design) and altering the AFR etc, so John's tune could absorb some or most of their gains similar to what happened in his header test. Just curious at this point how everything is going to add up.
