That little worse balance(the Renesis weighs almost exactly the same as the MZR) would have been a fair trade for a vehicle that has trash for resell value. A '04 RX-8 GT is worth the same or less than a base '04 MX-5. Brilliant idea though but the implementation wasn't good and that isn't the chassis' fault.

The S2000 still had good balance and had an "inferior" piston 4 banger. So I'd say the placement is just marketing fluff. An interesting anecdote is that the two share a transmission design and it's probably one of the more common failures that the two share. :-/
