It always irked me because beep codes (like CELs) vary from manufacturer and some aren't even used at all anymore. Newer motherboards are starting to feature a double-digit (seven segment LEDs) code that tells you what is going on. I upgraded my brother's PC recently and got a board with this feature, REALLY helpful.

Most things are going towards being more open, the car manufacturers should embrace it a bit more. They don't need to have everything exposed, but most cars should be able to at least display the CEL on the radio or another screen (like all those ones Hondas come with now). It's stupid that you even need to pay somebody $X to get that code for you, just a grotesque rip-off.
Buy a $20-30 code reader one time. Problem solved. The fraction of car buyers that would want or even comprehend that functionality has got to be so miniscule it's probably never even been considered by a car manufacturer.

EDIT: Or what he said above.
