E85 is probably more prevelant in the corn growing areas of the country. US E85 is made from corn stock. I think part of the reason E85 is so hard to come by in some areas is marketing, vehicle age, and manufacturer demand. E85 was marketed as a cleaner burning alternative to gasoline, but it gets worse MPG. That isn't bad if you're driving a supercar or high performance vehicle, but when the majority of vehicles that use it/marketed as flex fuel vehicles are SUV's.....

Vehicle age has a lot to do with it because a lot of the driving populace has cars that are 10 years old or so. Now a days with a lot of cars the manufacturing has gotten better, so the average age of vehicles will increase even more. A lot of those cars were designed without any E85 considerations in mind and it's detrimental to older engines. It's like leaded fuel. A lot of cars were designed to run on it, when they stopped making it, performance, mpg, and reliability suffered.

As far as the manufacturer is concerned, not a lot of vehicle companies make E85 vehicles. The 2 biggest that spring to mind are Chevy and Ford. Not a lot of other car manufacturers produce a vehicle that was designed to run on both. I think the lack of infrastructure, lack of benefit over normal gasoline, and the "buzz" of electric/hybrid vehicles are what is preventing E85 from being adopted.

Again, not busting on the OP, but as bad as our fuel pumps sound on E10, I'd hate to hear it on E85.
