It was a joint project from the beginning but that doesn't mean they both shared equally on the inputs of money, parts, or technical skills.
Plus even if Toyota gets the Japanese market and Scion gets the North American market for their version. That would leave the European market open. Subaru is pretty popular in Europe, from what I've heard. I still think they'll go with that arrangement rather than risk competing.

I have no idea what the finances are behind the scene. But working on the engine and transmission seems like a lot of work to me. You also think they had no input on the suspension? Each does their own interior and exterior styling. But I don't think Subaru is getting a free ride on this.
