It really goes beyond that (although I agree with you).

You get into an accident and go through your windshield but you don't die. You're rushed into surgery and get some crazy stuff done which costs tons of money. Your insurance only covers say...35K of your 110K bill which saddles you with 75K of medical bills. You pay for a couple years but then realize that filing bankruptcy is easier than paying your bills. You in essence default on your debt.

Think the Hospital just sucks that up? Nope...that's a tax write off. Know who ends up paying for that? Taxpayers.

Safety in cars and on bikes isn't because the government is too touchy feely...it's because tax payers were tired of bailing out people who couldn't pay their bills (not that I blame them directly).

Wear your seatbelt, don't get mangled in an accident, then I won't have to pay your hospital bill.
