There's actually two different stories from Toyota and Subaru about the early development and who really took charge. My understanding of the basic similarities between the two stories is that they did share costs and both had engineers and designers involved in the project at some point. I'm not really biased to either one per se as I like to think they tried to keep it 50:50 as much as was reasonably possible. But, for example, we know Toyota is doing most of the marketing.
The issue I see Toyota/Subaru fans get stuck on and make an issue of is the majority of the individual cars were built/assembled by Subaru, excluding the D4S system and a couple other parts like the audio. That ignores the huge investment in design and engineering that was involved. Plus some people hate the boxer or more likely just hate the mac struts front suspension, right @
