Super thread rescuscitation.
I'm getting this after 128k miles. I do have one of the rear diff bushings worn out. The worse it wears, the worse the clunk gets. I have on hard pull, then shift, worst on 1-2 shift. I can go soft and eliminate driving. I crawled under my car tonight to look for some interference to account for the noise. I found an exhaust clamp bumping the steel tank cover a bit, but that wasn't it.
I can't find any metal to metal rubbing/clunking anywhere. I'm thinking the shot bushings have some metal capture in them that's smacking together now that the bushing material is shot. I had this happen on one of my jeep engine mounts. I can't explain the noise any other way at the moment. And I'm not sure how these bushings are put together, my answer is pure theory.
In my case, it sounds like it's coming from the back left, but may just be the center where the bushing is. Sounds further back than the transmission bushing, and I just put the whiteline bit in there far enough back it shouldn't be it as I torqued it down good, and I'd hear and feel that under the center console.
