Yes there is much left out and much compressed in the movies. Yet, never having read the books I was able to follow and very much enjoy the 1984 movie. This in spite of Kyle MacLachian’s acting. The only disappointment I recall with the 2021 version was that it split the 1984 version into two parts.
I have the 1984 Dune on VHS, Laser disc and Blue Ray. (I was never able to obtain the uncut version with the nude scenes that was available on laser disc at a HUGE premium.) The multiple made for TV series I have on DVD’s but do not remember them as being all that well done. Jodorosky’s Dune I have on DVD.

i only watch the 'bad lip reading' youtube videos of dune. haven't tried to look into it otherwise, the idea of the series just doesn't excite me.
