Dredging up this zombie thread... has anyone found a definitive answer to this issue?
I'm nothing like a newbie- have been driving manual transmission cars for 40 years, from a '63 Falcon with a 3 on the tree and no synchro into first to the legendary Miata with its perfect 6 speed. I've had my FR-S for 10 years and a tad over 100,000 miles.
I started getting a bit of grinding on 6-5 downshifts at around the 85,000 mile mark. Had the transmission fluid replaced at 90,000 miles, taking the car to a reputable dealership and having them replace the fluid with Toyota's factory-spec gearbox juice.
The throwout bearing bit the dust at 100,000 miles (actually pretty good for the wimpy OEM piece) so while the transmission was out I had the shop change out the fluid with Redline, hoping that would cure the grind. No such luck.
So... any idea what's up with this? Has anyone found a definitive problem and, more importantly, a fix?
