Actually no.
Credits cards help your score if you use them correctly and manage the risk they represent when things go wrong. For them to help you need to:
Pay them on time
Pay them off each month
Do not use them to their limit (carry a large available to owed credit).
I do this because I am basically debt free, including the mortgage. It is the only way to keep a high credit score without also having some form of consumer debt.
