So time and technology marches on I guess, this system appears to be a simple blower, but these days you can actually get cooling systems that use Thermal Electric Devices (TEDs) that produce either cool or warm air, depending upon the polarity of the electricity passed through them.

It seems this OEM type technology is available now in the aftermarket. Seat upholstery obviously needs to be swapped out with perforated leather (or vinyl), and then you can install these kits to have OEM like heated and cooled seats..

Not sure how the heated air is verses the heating elements in the seat, but I can tell you our Mazda CX-5's cooled seats are REALLY nice in the summer, no longer having to arrive with a sweat soaked back/shirt..

This site also offers replacement perforated seat covers for 86's as well.

With the cooling units coming in at $375/seat, and the replacement leather covers at $1000- $1,600 depending on the leather option, it isn't a cheap proposition, and the install looks pretty involved, but pretty cool (pun intended) none-the-less..

So as our illustrious leadership says, "with the significance of the passage of time"
