Journal bearings can wear to the point of being sloppy enough to knock before oil pressure kicks in. If this is the case, the engine can take it for a while, but it's days are numbered. Thick oil can stave off the inevitable for a time.
Don't take it anywhere you can't afford to have a catastrophic failure.
