After much much troubleshooting after about a week we found the crank pulley on the honda motor hadn't been tightened enough (even though I torqued it to what was called for ) which allowed the timing gear on the crank to have play and eventually snap the locating pin.
Thanks for this info, I went with the ati damper as well and will keep an eye out for this. Out of curiosity how were you not shredding belts?

I was told in the future to hone the inside by sanding the coating down to the metal with sandpaper. Belts usually aren't an issue with the rotrex if you have good alignment. I have also made a my own belt tensioner device to put pressure on the idler at all times so it won't slip.
