there's a catch strap that allows the airbag to pop the top part of the trim about 2" away from the steel a-pillar. that's enough for the airbag to deploy, but also keep the trim from becoming a projectile upon deployment.
still a bad idea to add stuff to them, but the entire piece of trim is still not going very far.
