In my experience hyperflash has nothing to do with sunlight and everything with outside temperatures. For me it only happened in the winter and when its gets real cold outside. I don't think I ever had it happen in the summer.
Another culprit could be moisture, I don't have 100% proof but washing the car might affect it too. For some reason many modern cars have issues with condensation inside the headlights and BRZ seems to have that problem too. When I wash the car in the winter and the next day is real cold I notice frost on the inside of the headlight and sometimes I get hyperflashing.
