I've noticed the shift action on my BRZ is the least smooth and most "clunky" shift action of any car I've owned. Other recent manual cars (Mazda, VW, BMW) were far smoother and I could shift much faster. Was this a function of heavy OEM shift knobs, different synchros? I don't exactly want to bash my way through the synchros, but making the shift action a bit faster/smoother would be nice.

Yep I'll post up another review with the other shift knobs. For whatever reason, I shift with a pistol grip in 1st/2nd gears, and then overhand for the rest.
Having driven this platform for a long time, whenever I drive anything else (BMW, VW, Porsche, even S2000) I sometimes feel they're too smooth haha. I must have gotten used to this shift feel and like that firm engagement into each gear at higher rpm/hard driving (maybe less so in day to day shifting).
If you want less notchy, I'd try something heavier than stock or possibly taller for increased leverage.
