The rear shifter mount is under the car just behind where the shifter passes into the tunnel. The cold might have caused the rubber bushing to get brittle and crack/snap which would allow more sideways motion of the shifter than usual, but would still fulfill it's basic function.
thanks, you're the man. I will post a conclusion when this gets replaced for anybody else having this issue
