Based on your info, my guess is the rear shifter mount bushing is broken. If it was a problem in the transmission, you probably wouldn't be able to get it into the right gear and you'd hear some pretty bad noises when driving.

The rear shifter mount is under the car just behind where the shifter passes into the tunnel. The cold might have caused the rubber bushing to get brittle and crack/snap which would allow more sideways motion of the shifter than usual, but would still fulfill it's basic function.
