There are only two parts to the airbag assembly. The charge(bomb) and the actual bag itself which is attached to the vinyl part. There is no way to separate the two without ruining the airbag. If you want to try, you can but know that a brand new Scion airbag retails for about $650. Take a look at the picture, that pink part is the actual bag which is nicely packed in there and right behind the vinyl.
While I do wish there was/is a more cost effective way to do the change, it really seems as though this is the only way to SAFELY do it. Please let us know if you discover another way man.

Your right, there is no way this is going to get any cheaper. The bomb is not the most expensive part, the airbag is...
I still say it is worth it, to get the 86 look. I am definitely going to do it, if I get a FR-S...
