On purpose? It may have been seen as a very acceptable compromise and commensurate with the way a lot of people drive. It's kind of the way I drove my last car too, and my last few motorcycles. It's just a little more pronounced here and therefore crystallized or codified. The car is a sedate Corolla when you want it to be and a high revving lightweight RWD sporty coupe when you want it to be. And we each get to decide for ourselves how much of A or B we want each day. Well, the 2.0 liter from the 8th gen Si (stock), except for a brief spike right at the VTEC, had a torque peak in the 3K range that was mirrored again in the 6K range. For the Subaru, I'd say it would be more correct to say the stock torque curve is essentially flat from 2500 - 3300 and from 4600 - 6500.
