I have to admit I do occasionally "allow" myself to check out roadside stands and some local fare even when solo driving (that covers "rest stops). I also try to avoid Interstates if I'm not in a rush particularly in relatively scenic areas.

This reminds me of the car groups in Japan. They have their group meet once every quarter & they just tour through Japan driving their car and stop at scenery/food. They stay 1 night at Japanese hotel to enjoy more food and drive back to their home next day. My cousin is in one of those group and he let me join one of the meet. We stayed extra day to enjoy the area and it was a lot of fun! Japan is about the size of Cali, so it kinda works, but to do that in US is a bit hard. lol
