The late merge works only when both lanes cooperate.
The driving lane just needs to keep space for ONE car in front of each of them.
The merging lane just needs to have ONE car at a time at the end of the lane.
The issue arises when the driving lane won't let people in OR the merging lane gets several cars all up at the front with no space between them to allow the driving lane to let one in at a time.
Both are the result of drivers that feel they are entitled to be in front of the rest.
Other than around the big cities where traffic volume simply overwhelms the system (due to entitled drivers) there are generally very few problems with zipper merging around here. In fact I recall that @
Ultramaroon even mentioned how good the drivers here were at it.
